Somerset is well known for it’s traditional farming, with 73% of the county’s land area being used for commercial farm holding. Somerset’s culinary offering is available in farm shops, delicatessens and local pubs, stocking wonderful home grown fresh and artisan food and drink.
History and Culture of Somerset
If you are a bit of a history buff, you will be spoilt for choice in Somerset. Outside London and Norfolk, Somerset has more Grade 1 Listed Buildings than any other county. Boasting spectacular castles, country houses, forts and ancient monuments, the county has its fair share of historic landmarks.
Dunster Castle
Situated on a hill surrounded by woodland is former motte and fortification, Dunster Castle. The centuries old castle was remodelled in the 18th century to create an ornate Victoria country house. Surrounding the castle are beautiful terraced gardens, with a collection of palms and sub-tropical plants.
Montacute House
The stunning Montacute House is definitely worth visiting whilst in Somerset. The building is of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design, featuring the Long Gallery, which showcases over 60 Tudor and Elizabethan portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. After exploring the house, visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens that surround Montacute.
The Bishop’s Palace
Located in Wells, The Bishops Palace and Gardens is a 13th century palace surrounded by 14 acres of picturesque gardens. The residence is decorated with historic paintings, and features the Great Hall and the Bishop’s private Chapel. Outside, visitors can stroll around the outstanding gardens, whilst children can discover and play in “The Dragon’s Lair”, which is hidden away in the Arboretum.
Family Activities in Somerset
As well as having spectuacular beaches and countryside to explore in, Somerset has many great animal parks and attractions for the whole family.
Brean Splash
Open all year round and for all ages, Brean Splash includes an indoor 25m-heated 6-lane swimming pool, shallow baby pool, waterslides and Rainbow Rings. The outside area includes baby slides and adult water slides, as well as a sunbathing area. Brean Splash is the perfect family day out on both sunny and cloudy days!
Longleat Safari Park
Nestled within 900 acres of amazing landscaped grounds, is the UK’s original drive-through safari park. Visitors can look at the animals from their car windows and get prime view of the giraffes, monkeys, tigers, lions and cheetahs. The safari park is a wonderful experience, allowing visitors to get up-close and personal with the world’s most amazing animals.
After the safari, visitors can explore the magnificent Longleat House, which has 15 rooms open for public viewing. Guided tours are offered through the Great Hall, Red Library, State Dining Room and Saloon.
