Walks in Hampshire

Home to The New Forest and part of the South Downs, as well as major cities, Southampton and Portsmouth, you can find some fantastic walks in Hampshire.  Whether you prefer countryside walks or coastal strolls, you can find a bit of everything in Hampshire, due to its great location.

National Trust Mottisfort Walk

This varied 6-mile walk around the Mottisfont Estate shows off the beautiful gardens, woodland and clear chalk river. The building you’ll see on your visit was built during the 18^th Century, but there’s been settlements on the area since the Middle Ages. Once you’ve finished your ramble, you could head into the house, peruse the art gallery, have a nibble at the café or do all three!

Rhinefield Ornamental Drive

On this hike you will feel as though you’ve been transported to the Sequoia forests of Northern California. Planted by the Victorians back in the 1850s, the redwood trees which line this walk are now the tallest trees in the whole of the New Forest. The ever-popular Tall Tree Trail takes you along the tree-lined path, where you can immerse yourself in the smells, sounds and feelings of the forest.

The South Downs Way

Beginning (or ending) in Winchester, this gorgeous long distance walk weaves past some of the many wonders of the south coast. At over 100-miles long you won’t be able to complete it in one day, but the planning and preparations you’ll have to do will make the feat all the more exciting.

Alresford Watercress Walk

Submitted by one of The Outdoor Guides followers, this walk through New Arlesford, Old Arlesford and the tiny hamlet of Abbotstone shows off the very best of the Hampshire countryside. It combines a village walk, a river walk and even a small hill climb. Once you’re back in the village you’ll be able to enjoy your favourite beverage at one of the many pubs or peruse the shops for keepsakes.
