Whether you’re an experienced rambler or just want to get outdoors more often, Cumbria is the ideal place to visit. The county is home to the Lake District and many, many beautiful walking routes that make walking holidays in Cumbria a popular staycation option for those looking to explore the UK.
Easy walks in Cumbria
Looking for something a little more leisurely? There are a number of easy walks in Cumbria that will still showcase the best of what the region has to offer, without exhausting you by the evening.
The Hawkshead/Latterbarrow route will take you through the small village of Hawkshead and up the moderate peak of Latterbarrow. Taking just over two hours, this walk spans around three miles and starts at the church of St Michael and All Angels.
If you’d like a route with a little less elevation, Brigsteer Woods is an easy walk in Cumbria that will fully immerse you in the Lake District National Park. This route passes Sizergh Castle and takes you through woodland paths, before emerging at a viewpoint in old Westmorland.
Moderate circular walks in Cumbria
Keen to take things up a level? There’s certainly no shortage of challenging circular walks in Cumbria, which will take you around lakes, over hills, and through stunning countryside that showcases what this slice of the UK is known for.
One such route is the Derwent Circular; a 7km trail that’s very popular for hiking and offers stunning views of Derwentwater. The route is known to get quite muddy during periods of wet weather, so make sure to come equipped if you want to tackle this trail in the autumn or winter months.
Another popular circular walk in Cumbria is the challenging 12km Loughrigg Fell Circular. This route takes walkers along rough paths, stone steps, and paved roads to mix things up and introduce various elements that make the Lake District special. The walk also includes a trip up to the summit of Loughrigg Fell, which offers some spectacular views if visibility allows.
Plan your walking holiday with a perfect pub stay
A walking holiday in Cumbria wouldn’t be complete without a cosy, relaxing stay at one of the county’s best pubs with rooms. Just picture it: a roaring fire to rest your weary feet after a long journey around the countryside, with an ice-cold pint of your favourite brew by your side.
