Explore the great outdoors with a trip to Northumberland National Park. Wander through picturesque valleys, admire magical waterfalls or ramble through moorland and hay meadows.

Located in the National Park is Hadrian’s Wall, which is possibly the most famous historic sight in the county and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The Wall stretches 73 miles across the country and took over six years to build during the Roman times. Built under the orders of Emperor Hadrian AD122, Hadrian’s Wall boasted 80 milecastles, 17 larger forts.  The Wall was said to be an inspiration to writer, George RR Martin who went onto writing about his own fictional Wall in bestselling books and hit TV series, Game of Thrones.

If you are more of a beach person, you will be spoilt for choice in Northumberland. The county boasts 30 miles of beaches, a Galapagos of islands, hidden coves and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whether you are looking for traditional seaside resorts, or sheltered beach gems, there are lots of places to discover and visit whilst in Northumberland. Water sport enthusiasts can go windsurfing at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, or kayaking and canoeing at the Coquet Shorebase Trust in Amble.
