The counties of Northumberland, Durham and Tyne make up the region and each have their own history, attractions and unique landscapes. The largest city in the North East of England is Newcastle upon Tyne and is a bustling city full of vibrant bars, restaurants and places to visit. The city’s quayside is a fantastic place for scenic walks and bike rides along the river and views of the region’s most famous bridges. The quayside area is home to art museums, exhbitions and internationally regarded music arenas.
The most famous landmark in the North East is located in Gateshead, a large town in Tyne and Wear. The contemporary sculpture, known as the Angel of the North was designed by Antony Gormley in 1998. It is a 20 metre steel sculture of an angel, with wings measuring 54 metres. This dramatic sculpture is the largest in Britain and is said to be the biggest angel sculpture in the world.
Durham is another popular city to visit whilst in the North East of England. The historic Durham Cathedral sits atop a dramatic rock formation overlooking the River Wear below. Visitors can climb the Cathedral Tower’s 325 steps for magnificent views of the city and surrounding countryside. Fans of Harry Potter, will be delighted to visit Chapter House and Cathedral Cloisters for a Hogwarts experience. The city also boasts an impressive castle which has been labelled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For those looking to explore the great outdoors, Northumberland National Park is a must-see. It is the least populated National Park in the UK and covers more than 400 square miles. With its clean air, waters and mesmerising countryside, it is one of England’s most peaceful locations to explore.
